When the Prince of Wales (later King George IV) wanted to woo his estranged lover back, he sent her a miniature painting of his eye with the note: “I send you a parcel, and I send you at the same time an eye. If you have not totally forgotten the whole countenance, I think the likeness will strike you.” Bejeweled Lover's Eyes were thereafter worn as a symbol of devotion and loyalty.
